SEALING

Once the wood surface has been properly cleaned, and stripped if necessary, it is time to apply the chosen sealant.

Some of the biggest marketing fibs ever told are in the sealant industry. Many businesses fail each year because they try to warrant their jobs based on the written warranty on the can of sealant. Deck Maintenance Corp regularly tests sealants, stains and preservatives against the warranty from the manufacturer and then provides those results to the homeowner.

Without the proper sealant many factors can come into play that will damage and rot your wood.

  • Freeze/Thaw

The extremes of winter weather in the midwest can be very damaging to unfinished wood surfaces. When daytime temperatures rise; snow and ice melt into the existing cracks in the wood. As the temperature falls this water freezes, causing the wood to contract and expand which leads to further cracking as time passes.

  • Organic buildup

Pollution and acid rain can cause the wood to become dull and dirty. Dirt accumulates on the wood surface and when it gets damp or wet it becomes acidic or alkaline, both of which are caustic to the surface.

  • Sun

Direct exposure from the sun causes the wood to become discolored. Wood becomes dried out and gray when its natural resins are removed by harmful ultra violet rays. Statistically a deck floor will wear out 40% sooner than the vertical portions.

Stains, tinted sealers and clear sealers come in a wide variety of colors, or can be color matched to your specifications. Deck Maintenance Corp uses only products of the highest quality. Our many years of experience come into play when we help you to choose the best product for your specific needs.

For most situations there are three basic types of treatment for unpainted exterior wood surfaces. Tinted sealers, semi-transparent stains and solid stains.

TINTED SEALERS prevent water damage and graying, provide excellent penetration and a rich finish which enhances the wood's natural beauty. They contain U.V. Protection and are durable and scuff proof. They protect against the growth of mildew and algae, and can be cleaned without removing the protective coating. This is our product line that uses preservatives to prevent decay of the wood.

SEMI-TRANSPARENT STAINS have the same basic attributes of the tinted sealers. They provide added color while letting most of the wood’s grain show through.

SOLID COLOR STAIN is available in a wide variety of basic colors and can be custom colored to your specifications. We use a premium quality, opaque solid color stain, suitable for all types of wood decks including pressure treated. This formula provides excellent adhesion and forms a highly protective and durable finish, which resists scuffing, cracking, peeling and blistering. This is where our architectural coatings line comes into play. There are over 1000 colors to choose from and can be used with our natural wood finishes to produce a custom look unobtainable by the novice.
